Exploration of contextual, cultural, and life cycle flows offers a critical lens for visualizing new housing strategies for living in the future. The d3 Housing Tomorrow competition invites architects, designers, engineers, and students to collectively explore, document, analyze, transform, and deploy innovative approaches to residential urbanism, architecture, interiors, and designed objects.

The competition calls for transformative solutions that advance sustainable thought, building performance, and social interaction through study of intrinsic environmental geometries, social behaviors, urban implications, and programmatic flows. Special emphasis may be placed on housing concepts that investigate dialogues including engagement of internal/external socio-economic diversity, change/adaptability over time, public/private spatial connectivity, and permanence/impermanence of materials. d3 challenges participants to rethink strategies for investigating residential design from macro-to-micro scales ranging from urban?promoting broader physical interconnectivity; communal?exploiting an interaction of units with shared facilities; and internal?examining the interior particularity of the unit, individual, or family in housing design toward promoting identity, ownership, and intimacy.

An architecture of emergence suggests that design expression requires purpose beyond formal assumption and aesthetic experimentation itself. Concurrent with sustainable thought, the d3 Housing Tomorrow competition assumes that architecture does not simply form, but rather perform various functions beyond those conventionally associated with residential buildings. Accordingly, design submissions must be environmentally responsible while fostering inventive conceptual living solutions for today and tomorrow. Although proposals should be technologically feasible, they may suggest fantastical architectural visions of a sustainable residential future.

The d3 Housing Tomorrow competition allows designers freedom to approach their creative process in a scale-appropriate manner, from large-scale master planning endeavors, to individual building concepts, to notions of the interior realm. Although there are no restrictions on site, scale, program, or residential building typology, proposals should carefully address their selected context.

To commemorate the centennial anniversary of the founding of Taiwan, R.O.C. and celebrate the merger between Taichung County and Taichung City, the government of Taiwan, R.O.C. will erect “Taiwan Tower” as an important landmark in the new special municipality. Here, visitors will be treated to a panorama view of the park, the city and the natural surroundings. The new landmark will also help visitors and residents orient themselves as Taichung makes the leap to become a world-class metropolis.

Taiwan Tower is to be located at the southern tip of Central Park, which is part of the former Taichung (Shuinan) Airport site, Taichung city. It will become a vista at the southern end of a major boulevard. Measuring approximately one hectare, the site is situated across from the Economic and Trade Park to the north. The project will comprise of Taiwan Tower and the Museum of Taichung City Development.

Though not aiming to compete in height with other towers of the world, in principle the observatory of Taiwan Tower should provide visitors with a view of the Taiwan Strait. The height is planned to be at least 300 meters. In addition, the site context and local architectural character should be integrated with 21st-Century building technology to symbolize the new Taiwan spirit. Taiwan Tower should also answer its call for environment responsibility and adopt the use of alternative energy. In implementing the government’s policies in energy conservation and carbon reduction, Taiwan Tower will act as a model of green building for the 21st century.

Thus, an international competition will be held to seek a forward-looking and innovative design and enliven the project with a fresh look and multifunctional use. Outstanding design teams from home and abroad are cordially invited to contribute pioneering planning and design ideas. Spread your creative wings and let the dream of a new-age landmark for Taichung take off!

	Respecting Heritage, Celebrating the Future

	Background and objective

The Agency of Partnership for Progress (APP), with its implementing partner, the Agency for the Development and Rehabilitation of the city of Fez (ADER-Fès), is issuing this competition for the design of a site in the Medina of Fez, Morocco, known as Place Lalla Yeddouna. The competition is being conducted in the context of an international development program funded by the United States of America, acting through the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), in accordance with the Millennium Challenge Compact (the “Compact”) dated August 31, 2007, between the United States of America and the Kingdom of Morocco.

	The Project

The competition site of approx. 7,400 sqm is located in the Medina of Fez, which is listed as a UNESCO world heritage site since 1981. Place Lalla Yeddouna is a strategic location at the nucleus of this oldest part of Fez. The Medina is a mosaic of small-scale, modest, sand-colored houses, and its endless labyrinth of narrow streets, where we can find still preserved as a living museum, an antique mode of life, full of history and shrouded in mystery.

The city of Fes and the Medina | Place Lalla Yeddouna site in the Medina of Fes (click to enlarge)

The area of Place Lalla Yeddouna, where the city was founded on the two banks of the main river in Fez (“Oued Al Jawahir”), used to be one of the key links between the two sides of the old city.

In the future, the area of Place Lalla Yeddouna shall be a vibrant mixed-use urban hub for the community as well as visitors to the Medina.

The site is expected to become a major catalyst for artisan development, with spaces for educational programs, residences, artisan production, shops, restaurants, cafés and other services. The new complex will support activities for youth and adults.

With its unique architectural character representing the regional building tradition and with its surrounding urban fabric, excellent accessibility and functionality, Place Lalla Yeddouna is expected to be a cultural site exemplary of our time and the region, and a stimulator and generator for the development of other projects in Fez, its region and Morocco.

The competition task comprises the urban design for the Place Lalla Yeddouna, the preservation of historic buildings as well as the design of new buildings.

The jury is entitled to unanimously decide to allocate the prize money in various amounts among the winners as long as the total remains USD 120,000.

The promoters will also fund the travel (Economy Class) and accommodation expenses for two persons to attend the Phase 2 colloquium on behalf of each Phase 2 participant.

Any other costs will not be reimbursed.

Fees and prizes are net of Moroccan taxes.

	Competitors

Architects or urban planners in association with architects are eligible to participate in the competition.
Considering the competition requirements, it is suggested to secure the collaboration of landscape architects. For participation in phase 2 the involvement of building engineers as well as cost experts and other experts such as sociologists is recommended.

	Eligibility

Eligible for participation are individuals who on the day of the announcement of the competition were entitled to use the occupational title “Architect” in their country of residence and, in collaboration with Architects, individuals who on the day of the announcement of the competition were entitled to use the occupational title “Urban Planner”.
Individuals from countries where the occupational title “Architect” or “Urban Planner” is not subject to statutory regulation are eligible, provided they hold a degree or similar certificate of professional aptitude that is recognized under 2005/36/EC (EU directive on recognition of professional qualifications).
Eligible for participation are also architect consortia formed of individuals and legal entities among whose statutory objectives figure planning activities relevant to the competition task, and architect consortia made up of such legal entities.
Legal entities and architect consortia must name a single authorized representative who will be responsible for the fulfilling of the competition requirements.
The authorized representative as well as all authors of competition entries must meet the eligibility criteria applying to competitors.
Notwithstanding the designation of a single authorized representative, each member of any consortium shall be jointly and severally liable for any submission by his or her consortium.
The statements made in the Declarations of Authorship form are considered legally binding.
Competitors are required to individually certify their eligibility for participation.
The eligibility of all finalists chosen in Phase 1 will be verified as a condition to their being authorized to participate in Phase 2.

	Impediments to participation

Subject to the limitations below, eligibility is unrestricted in terms of countries and regions.
However, ineligible for participation are those who, due to their collaboration in the preparation or running of the competition, might be in a favored position or able to influence the jury’s decision, including, without limitation, members of the jury and the promoter’s staff, employees and other permanent collaborators of participants as well as those who were involved with it in any way, as well as their spouses, first- and second-degree relatives or in-laws, their permanent business or project partners, and the immediate superiors and staff of ineligible persons.

Ineligible for participation are also those having a business interest in the object of the competition beyond the scope of the competition’s planning services, if this is apt to influence bidding processes for services required for the physical implementation of the competition object.

A competitor will be ineligible for participation if such competitor would be excluded from an APP procurement pursuant to Part 10 Eligibility Verification Procedures of Millennium Challenge Corporation Program Procurement Guidelines, as may be amended from time to time: www.mcc.gov/mcc/bm.doc/mcc-guidelines-programprocurement.pdf.

This would also remove from eligibility any individual, firm or entity that is organized in or has its principal place of business or a significant portion of its operations in any country that is subject to sanction or restriction by law or policy of the United States, as such list of countries may change from time to time.
http://www.mcc.gov/mcc/bm.doc/mcc-ppg-eligibilityverification.pdf.

In addition, competitors will be ineligible for participation if:

 as a matter of law or official regulation, The Kingdom of Morocco prohibits commercial relations with the country of such competitor;

by an act of compliance with a decision of the United Nations Security Council taken under Chapter VII of the Charter of the United Nations, the Kingdom of Morocco prohibits any import of goods from the country of such competitor, or any payments to persons or entities in such country; or

such competitor is otherwise deemed ineligible by MCC pursuant to any policy or guidance that may, from time to time, be in effect as posted on the MCC website at www.mcc.gov.

For the avoidance of doubt, the eligibility principles outlined in this brief shall apply to each member of any consortium.

An eligibility review will be conducted on all competitors chosen by the jury to proceed to phase 2 of the competition to ensure compliance with all eligibility requirements. Notwithstanding a positive determination of eligibility at the end of phase 1 of the competition, any competitor may be disqualified from the competition at any time if it is determined that the competitor fails to meet the eligibility requirements.

turnmeon & OzQuest seek the design of a system to deliver water that addresses current problems associated with water supply, quality and use in the rural regions of Nepal.

This competition seeks a multi-disciplinary approach, and encourages architects, industrial designers, landscape architects, engineers and the like to work together to design a system to deliver water from a natural spring site to a localised tap, filter water to improve water quality, store water to ensure regular supply, educate users about water management.

Designs should consider the site, cultural context, local skills and materials and be community driven, low cost, low tech, low maintenance and be sustainable.

We are excited to announce the launch of the 5th annual Ed Bacon Student Design Competition! Over the past several years this competition has given students the opportunity to focus on real-life urban design problems that embody challenges facing cities across the developed world.

This year's competition, "Designing the Fair of the Future", is a chance for students to dream big! With the 250th birthday of America in 2026, students are asked to imagine an international World’s Fair style celebration in Philadelphia. Ed Bacon himself proposed a 1976 World's Fair in Philadelphia as a way to lay infrastructure for future urban development. While that project fell apart for reasons both financial and political, it may yet be possible to successfully pursue this model for urban development.

Philadelphia’s southern tip is an under-planned section of the city that would benefit from infrastructure and other investments. It already includes stadiums, waterfront, industrial sites, oil refineries, corporate headquarters, shipping terminals, residential neighborhoods, and parks but has yet to be fully activated by a compelling and cohesive design plan. How could a grand international celebration of America’s birth help spark better use of this land?

This competition is open to US and international students of any discipline at the college or university-level. The program launches online today and entries are due at the Center for Architecture by 6pm on November 02, 2010. First prize is $2,000, with total prize money of $6,000.

We welcome individual and team submissions, and encourage you to promote this program to your students. Please feel free to incorporate this program into your curriculum or fall-semester studios. For more information, please visit www.edbacon.org/USA250 or email info@edbacon.org.

The Global Design Competition aims to collect a broad variety of design solutions for low carbon restaurants by any means possible, including but not limited to reduction in the need for electricity, food product choices, localized power generation and waste energy capture and reuse.

Toward this goal, entrants are encouraged to re-envision the kitchen and dining space, not as a room of separated appliances fulfilling individual functions, but as a whole functioning system of cooperating elements in which potential ambient energies such as passive solar light and heat and seasonal cold are utilized and waste energy and materials are recycled in the most efficient manner.

The carbon score of the overall design will include the embodied energy of all food ingredients, including energy used to grow, harvest, process and package and deliver the ingredients. Designs that integrate food growth are encouraged.

The primary consideration is elimination of the need for electricity in operations. The next priority is elimination of the need for energy in the manufacture of equipment and the site's building materials. The third priority, embodied carbon of the food and beverage products, will be included in the over all score as a separate aspect from the energy use in the kitchen and dining room.

We encourage participants to form multidisciplinary teams to ensure feasibility of designs by taking into full account the areas of building design and construction, appliance engineering and restauranteering.

With this competition, we hope to realize the opportunity to catalyze a market competitive esthetic by joining the sustainability and maximum ambient energy utility paradigms of the appropriate technology community and combined function advantages of integrated design with current best practices in industrially engineered appliances and tools. Our resultant shareware reference collection will serve as a services directory for participating designers, drawing attention and clients to their practices and continuing to promote increased market share and saturation for sustainable businesses.

Our jury panel is comprised of professionals, educators and innovators in the fields of engineering, architecture, life-cycle analysis, vertical farming, green building, restaurant operations and business modeling. Profiles are available at the competition website:

	ww.globaldesigncompetition.com/jury.html

A grand prize of $10,000 will be awarded to the winning design team.

	Open Call for Participants

The Architecture Foundation, Ordem dos Arquitectos and British Council are developing an exchange programme between the UK and Portugal for 2010-2011. This follows on from successful Architecture Foundation exchange projects in the United States, Italy, and Turkey (with current exchanges underway with Poland and Norway). The aim of this partnership is to identify, exchange and promote the best new architects from countries around the world through developing networks, dialogue and cultural exchange that allow for the sharing of information, ideas and new thinking.

We will identify three exciting emerging architects in both the UK and Portugal, who will act as ambassadors for the architectural scenes in their respective countries, taking part in reciprocal programmes to each country with a schedule of coordinated activities including public lectures, studio visits and site tours. The UK architects will visit Lisbon in October 2010 for a programme created by Ordem dos Arquitectos which will coincide with the Lisbon Architecture Triennale (approx 3 days around 21-24 October) - www.trienaldelisboa.com/en . In the UK the reciprocal programme will be organised for the Portuguese Architects who will visit London in late November/early December 2010. Selection will be made by senior Architecture Foundation and Ordem dos Arquitectos staff alongside expert advisors, drawn from a wide cross section of the architectural community, including the British Council.

Who is eligible to take part?

All practices must have been founded after January 2000, be professionally certified, and cannot have featured in Architecture Foundation public programme in the past two years.
The New Architects: Portugal_UK exchange will take its cue from the theme of this year’s Lisbon Architecture Triennale: ‘Let’s Talk About Houses’, and as such, it is expected that the architects selected for this particular exchange will have demonstrable interest and experience in working with the design of and/or research about houses, whether private or public, single or multiple unit.

	How to submit?

If you are a UK-based practice interested in taking part in this international programme, please submit the following material in English, via email to: exchange@architecturefoundation.org.uk by 24.00 (midnight) on 19 September 2010. In advance of submission, questions may also be directed to that address, but must be sent by 12.00 (midday) Thursday 16 September in order to receive a reply.

All material must be submitted digitally.

Questions can only be answered via email—please do not call.

Portugese practices must submit to the Ordem dos Arquitectos directly - please see www.arquitectos.pt

	Required material for submission

A PDF practice profile (up to 750 words) including the age of the practice, names of all principals, and relevant professional qualifications.

A PDF portfolio (no more than 10 A3 pages) of text and images, that presents five projects (may include installations and exhibitions) by your practice.

Responses to the following questions (c. 750 words in total):

	a) What are the main influences and inspirations for your practice?
b) What are the most important issues currently facing the UK that architects should be addressing?
c) Which architects from Portugal do you find most interesting?
d) What would you hope to gain from an exchange programme with architects in Portugal?
e) How does the work of your practice respond to the Lisbon Architecture Triennale theme ‘Let’s Talk About Houses’?www.trienaldelisboa.com/en
