Guidelines:

Abraaj Capital Art Prize Application Guidelines:

i)All application forms and additional material should be sent electronically. If the proposal is for video work this must be couriered as a hard copy to the Art Dubai address listed on this form.

ii) Applications may only be submitted by curators with the joint consent of the artist.

iii) Application forms are solely available in English. Curators must submit a short curriculum of past exhibitions and a short curriculum of the artist they propose as well as a brief artist’s statement. In addition, curators are required to submit three written articles and most importantly, each curator is asked to write a short curatorial proposal for the work of the artist in the submission, and the reasons why they wish to work with the nominated artist. All information, excluding the three published articles, should be submitted in English. Please Note that that all information should be submitted electronically.

iv) The project submitted must result in a finished artwork in time for Art Dubai 2010 and cannot be part of an ongoing project or series. Artworks already shown in public before the announcement of the Abraaj Capital Prize winning project will not be accepted. Similarly no co-sponsors for a project will be accepted.

v) As the winning submissions will become part of the Abraaj Capital Corporate Collection the work must be able to form part of this permanent collection (ie. Performance submissions will not be accepted). Projects with a short shelf-life or projects that require continuous maintenance to prolong the ideal state of the works will not be accepted.

vi) Issues related to conservation and installation and how to deal with them in the future must be dealt with in the curatorial proposal.

vii) If the projects submitted are expected to be in numbered editions, the proposals must clearly state the number of editions expected to be produced and most importantly the artist’s proof should be submitted for the Abraaj Corporate Collection.
Artists

The Directories (Artists’ Directory and Curators’ Directory – to be found on the Art Dubai website) are a tool to instigate introductions between artists and curators. However it is the sole responsibility of the artist or curator to establish and maintain contact with one another. The details found on the Art Dubai website have been submitted by interested curators and artists and are listed only to assist candidates in sourcing such contacts.

Artists must be practicing and currently living in the MENASA region. There is no age restriction.

Each artist will be expected to keep a record of the development of the artistic process.
The Role of the Curator

As part of a collaborative process, the curator will be expected to produce a record of the ideas and development of the exhibition and guide the design and content of the final catalogue. The curator will be the main point of contact for the organisation of the Abraaj project however, there will be backup support from the Abraaj team at Art Dubai. Commercial galleries or curators employed by galleries will not be qualified to submit proposals with artists that they represent.
Selection

Application forms must be received by 5pm, Thursday, 30th April 2009.

A selection committee will convene and the successful applicants will be notified in due course.
